Google Business Profile for Contractors: The Free Lead Source Most Companies Waste

By Raid Contractor Marketing · · 3 min read

When someone searches "[your trade] near me," the first thing they see isn't a website. It's the map with three business listings, star ratings, and a "call now" button — what Google calls the Local Pack. For home-service searches, that map result gets the overwhelming majority of the clicks. Your beautifully built website could rank page one and still lose most of the traffic to whichever three contractors show up in that box above it.

That box is powered entirely by your Google Business Profile (GBP). It's free. Most contractors have one, half-filled out, unclaimed, or untouched since the day it was created — and then wonder why a competitor with a worse website is getting all the calls.

Here's how to actually use it.

1. Claim it and verify it — don't assume you're done

If you've never explicitly gone through Google's verification process, your listing might technically exist but not be under your control, or might be a duplicate. Search your business name in Google Maps and check who owns it. This is step zero and it's the one contractors skip most.

2. Get your category and service area exactly right

Your primary category (e.g. "HVAC contractor," "Roofing contractor," "Plumber") is one of the strongest ranking signals Google uses to decide who shows up for what search. Pick the most accurate primary category, then add every relevant secondary category you legitimately offer. Set your service areas to the actual cities/zip codes you work in — not just your home city — since that's what determines whether you show up for someone searching two towns over.

3. Reviews are the single biggest factor you control

Star rating and review count are the first thing a homeowner compares between the three options Google shows them. A contractor with 60 reviews at 4.8 stars beats one with 6 reviews at 5.0 stars almost every time — volume signals you're actually active and trusted, not just lucky.

The fix isn't complicated, it's just a habit most contractors don't build: ask every satisfied customer for a review, right after the job, with a direct link. A text message with your GBP review link sent the same day, while the good experience is fresh, will out-perform any "please review us" line buried in an invoice email. Respond to every review too, good and bad — it signals an active, attentive business, and Google notices engagement.

4. Photos aren't decoration — they're a ranking and trust signal

Listings with recent, real photos consistently perform better than listings with none or with only a logo. Post actual completed jobs, your trucks, your crew. This does double duty: it improves how the listing performs, and it's exactly the kind of proof that gets a hesitant homeowner to pick up the phone instead of scrolling to the next result.

5. Use Google Posts and Q&A — most competitors ignore both

GBP lets you publish short updates (a completed project, a seasonal promotion, a service reminder) and lets anyone ask public questions about your business. Both sit right on your listing where potential customers are already looking. Posting even monthly, and proactively seeding a few common questions ("Do you offer emergency service?" "Do you serve [neighboring town]?") with clear answers, is easy ground almost nobody else in your trade is bothering to cover.

6. Keep everything consistent everywhere

Your business name, address, and phone number need to match exactly across your GBP, your website, and any directory you're listed on (Yelp, Angi, Facebook, etc.). Inconsistencies — a different suite number here, "Inc." there — quietly undermine how much Google trusts your listing, which is entirely within your control to fix.

The bottom line

Paid ads get attention because you're paying to be seen. Your Google Business Profile earns attention for free, every single day, to people who are actively searching for exactly what you do, right now, in your service area. Most contractors leave it half-finished. Fixing it properly is one of the highest-return few hours you can put into your business this month — and it compounds every month after. If you'd rather have it done right the first time and kept up month to month, that's exactly what our SEO service handles. See how it works →
