The Review Request Swipe File for Contractors
Copy-and-paste texts, emails, and scripts for getting more Google reviews, plus replies for good and bad ones.
What's inside
- In person, as you wrap up the job
- Same-day text (the one that works best)
- Text from the owner (more personal)
- Email version
- Gentle follow-up (4–5 days later, only if they haven't left one)
Reviews are the first thing homeowners compare when Google shows them three contractors. The businesses with the most reviews usually aren't better. They just ask every time. Copy these, swap in your details, and save them on your phone.
Before you start: get your direct review link from your Google Business Profile dashboard ("Ask for reviews" or "Get more reviews") so customers land straight on the review box.

In person, as you wrap up the job
"Glad we could get this sorted for you today. We're a local business and most of our work comes from Google. If you were happy with how it went, would you mind leaving us a quick review? I'll text you the link right now so it takes 30 seconds."
Say it, then send text #2 before you pull out of the driveway.

Replying to a negative review
Hi [Customer Name], thank you for the feedback, and I'm sorry your experience wasn't what you expected. That's not the standard we hold ourselves to. I'd like to understand what happened and make it right, please call me directly at [Phone] or email [Email]., [Owner Name], [Business Name]
Reply calmly, within 48 hours, don't argue details in public, and move the conversation offline. Future customers are reading your reply more than the complaint.
Rules that keep your reviews safe
- Ask everyone. Don't only send the link to customers you think are happy. Google calls that "review gating" and doesn't allow it.
- No rewards. Don't offer discounts, gift cards, or entries into drawings for reviews. It's against Google's policies and can get reviews removed.
- Never write your own or have friends and family post fake reviews.
- Only text customers who gave you their number for the job, and stop if anyone asks you to.
- Timing matters: the same day the job is done, while they're happiest, gets far more reviews than a week later.
